Week 5 UDL Guidelines

In today’s post I am going to review a research article by providing a summary of the article and discuss the connections of the article in regards to a lesson planning project I am completing.  The article I will be discussing is Universal Design for Learning: Scanning for Alignment in K-12 Blended and Fully Online Learning Materials Authored by James D. Basham, Sean J. Smith, and Allyson L. Satter. This particular article was chosen for its relevance in discussing differentiation, authentic learning opportunities, and making sure classroom resources are adaptive and inclusive to every student’s needs. While many teachers create and use curriculum that will be differentiated to meet the needs of every student, the integration of technology and online learning platforms has left some wondering if online learning materials are being aligned in the same way other classroom materials and resources are. The article examines the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and a develo...

How People Learn II Chapter 5 Knowledge and Reasoning

In the reading How People Learn we get a better understanding that learning is not a singular task. Teachers must create curriculum that meets the needs of all students and the different ways they learn. Implementing technology into student's learning can help foster creative learning environments by giving students additional resources to apply logical and critical thinking skills. The technology tools teachers choose to implement need to enhance problem solving skills and engage students in their process. "An important dimension of implementing activities that are calculated to develop student creativity is that they include time and focus to acknowledge the creativity that emerges" (Gura, p. 65, 2016). Students need time to practice what they have learned and understand concepts they are expected to master. Creating lessons that are spaced out over time and allows students to build on prior knowledge is an important factor in helping students meet their lea...

Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instruction & Assessment

As we look into integrating technology with instruction ,we are going to take a deeper dive into discussing important aspects of doing so. What is authentic instruction?Authentic instruction/Authentic intellectual work(AIW) are frameworks that help educators use and design curriculum and assessments that enhance student learning by implementing lessons and instruction that is meaningful to students' everyday lives. We will answer three questions today that help clarify what AIW and authentic instruction is, components of AIW and authentic instruction, and give a specific example of these being used in a discipline or content area.  What is the nature of Authentic Intellectual Work?  How does it differ from traditional approaches to instruction and assessment? When considering the Triple E framework Kolb discusses the "the three elements that are key to creating authentic enhancement in a learning task with technology" (Kolb, 2020, p.61). The elements are located below: ...

Introduction

Hello, My name is Rebekah McGlaslin. I am a second year kindergarten teacher. I have a degree in Child Development and Early Intervention. After several years of working with toddlers and preschoolers I made the transition to teach in a public school setting. I am currently working towards a master degree for Curriculum and Instruction with dual emphasis in both generalist and reading. As a parent to a child who has been diagnosed with dyslexia, I know the struggle of learning to read personally. Teaching children reading skills and getting early intervention is extremely important to me. Advocating for appropriate and evidence based reading instruction is important in achieving my future goals as an early childhood educator.  One method that can help students, learning to read, achieve their goals is by implementing technology into their lessons. Each student learns differently so giving them access to various tools, instruction, and different methods of learning is extreme...
